Section Control

Control your implement sections automatically with AgOpenGPS — via ISOBUS, RS232, CAN or hardware mods.

What is Section Control?#

Section Control allows AgOpenGPS to automatically turn on/off individual sections of your implement (sprayer booms, planter rows, spreader sections) based on your field boundary and already-covered area. This eliminates overlap and skip, saving inputs and money.

There are multiple ways to connect your implement to AgOpenGPS for section control. Choose the method that matches your equipment:

  • ISOBUS (ISO 11783) – Modern implements with ISOBUS Task Controller support
  • RS232 – Older rate controllers that accept serial commands
  • CAN – Direct CAN bus communication for specific brands
  • Hardware mods – Relay-based or direct wiring modifications

ISOBUS#

The standard way. AgOpenGPS acts as an ISOBUS Task Controller and sends section commands over the CAN bus to any ISOBUS-compliant implement. Requires a PCAN adapter.

Tested & Working

Monosem, Kverneland, KUHN, Amazone, Berthoud ecTronic, Müller MIDI sprayer, Vaderstad Tempo, John Deere Sprayer

RS232 (Serial)#

For older rate controllers and implements that accept serial RS232 commands. These bridges translate AgOpenGPS section commands into the proprietary serial protocol of your controller.

CAN (Direct)#

Direct CAN bus communication for brand-specific section control, bypassing the ISOBUS Task Controller layer. Useful when the implement doesn't fully support ISOBUS TC but does respond to specific CAN messages.

Hardware Mods#

Physical hardware modifications for section control when no digital interface is available. Typically involves intercepting or replacing valve drivers with relay boards controlled by AgOpenGPS.

Rate Controller / Full Sprayer Control#

Complete rate control solutions that handle both section switching and application rate. These systems include their own custom PCBs and can fully control a sprayer.

Which method should I use?#

Method Best for Requires
ISOBUS Modern implements with ISOBUS socket PCAN adapter + CPC connector
RS232 Older controllers (Bogballe, TUVR, AGTronik) USB-RS232 adapter + custom bridge firmware
CAN Brand-specific direct control PCAN adapter + brand-specific software
Hardware No digital interface available Relay board + wiring work
